The Chinese zodiac is a twelve year cycle, each year ruled by an animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. Your birth year animal describes your character and fortune, and a rotating element, wood, fire, earth, metal, or water, colours it further.
What the Chinese zodiac signs mean
The order is not random, and the story behind it is my favourite in any divination system. The Jade Emperor called a great race, and the first twelve animals across the river won a place and a year. The Rat rode over on the Ox's back and leapt off at the finish to steal first, which tells you plenty about the Rat's reputation for cleverness. The Cat, famously, was tricked out of a place and has resented the Rat ever since. Folklore with a grudge in it tends to be old folklore.
Unlike the western zodiac, which turns on the month you were born, the Chinese signs turn on the year. Everyone born in a given lunar year shares an animal, and that animal is read as a character sketch and a rough fortune, not a horoscope you check on a Tuesday.
The twelve animals and their core traits
Here is the quick sketch of each, in racing order:
- Rat: quick, resourceful, charming, a touch opportunistic
- Ox: steady, patient, dependable, stubborn when pushed
- Tiger: bold, magnetic, brave, prone to leaping first

Here is where it gets richer than the animal alone. Layered over the twelve animals is a five element cycle, wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, each ruling two years at a time. Your animal comes in five flavours, and the same sign born under different elements reads quite differently.
A Fire Goat runs warmer and bolder than a gentle Water Goat, for instance, and the coming Fire Goat year has a character all its own, which I get into in the year of the Fire Goat 2027. The full pairing of animal and element repeats only every sixty years, which is why a sixtieth birthday is a genuine milestone in Chinese tradition: you have finally come back round to your exact birth sign.

By your birth year, but mind the new year date. The Chinese year begins in late January or February, not on the first of January, so anyone born in that early window belongs to the previous year's animal. Check the exact lunar new year date for the year you were born before you settle on your sign, or you may claim the wrong animal for life.
Is your own zodiac year unlucky?
The year of your animal, your ben ming nian, comes round every twelve years and carries a reputation for turbulence, because you are thought to brush against the year's ruling energy by sharing it. The traditional remedy is charming rather than grim: wear red, given to you by someone else, to stay protected. Treat it as a year to move with a little care, not a sentence.
Can two people of the same animal be compatible?
Often yes, though it depends on the animal. Two Horses may give each other the freedom both crave, while two Roosters can peck each other raw with equal honesty. Sharing a sign means sharing the strengths and the same blind spot, which either doubles the harmony or doubles the friction. The elements between them usually decide which way it tips.
