Ask ten people what a psychic experiences and nine will describe a movie: full-color visions, ghostly voices, the future playing on a screen. Then they try to develop their own intuition, get a subtle nudge instead of a cinema, and decide they have no ability at all. That's the misunderstanding this article exists to kill. The clair senses, from the French clair, meaning clear, are the actual channels psychic information moves through, and they are quieter, stranger, and far more common than the movies let on. I'll take you through all six, tell you how each one shows up in a working reading, and show you how to figure out which one you already have.

Because you do have one. Everybody's radio has at least one station. Most people just never sit still long enough to hear it.

What the clair senses actually are

Your ordinary senses take in the physical world. The clair senses are their inner counterparts: impressions that arrive through the same mental channels, seeing, hearing, feeling, knowing, even smell and taste, without a physical source in the room. You've already used them. The gut feeling that made you take a different route. Knowing who was calling before you looked. Walking into a kitchen after an argument you didn't witness and feeling it hanging there like weather.

That's the entry level, and it's universal. What a professional psychic has isn't a different piece of equipment; it's the same equipment with the volume up and years of practice telling signal from noise. The signal-versus-noise part is the actual job, by the way. Anyone can receive impressions. Knowing which ones to trust took me years, and I'm still ruthless about checking.

The six clair senses, one by one

Clairvoyance: clear seeing

The famous one, and the most misrepresented. Clairvoyance is almost never seeing things with your eyeballs. It's a mental image, the same channel you use when you picture your childhood bedroom, except you didn't put the picture there. In a reading it might be a flash of a red door, a man in a plaid coat, a calendar page. Brief, specific, and gone in a second if you don't grab it.

Clairaudience: clear hearing

Inner hearing. Words, names, fragments of song that land in the mind with a texture that isn't yours. Mine arrives like a note slid under a door: a single word, sideways, faster than my own thinking and flatter in tone. When a name shows up that way, I say it. When it shows up because I've been guessing, I don't. Learning that difference was half my apprenticeship.

Clairsentience: clear feeling

Feeling as information: emotions or physical sensations that belong to someone else arriving in your body. A tightness in the chest when a client mentions her son. A wave of grief off a stranger who's smiling. In my experience this is the most common clair by a wide margin, and the least recognized, because people file it under "I'm just sensitive."

Claircognizance: clear knowing

The strangest one. Information arrives complete, with no image, sound, or feeling attached. You simply know the couple will reconcile, or the job offer is wrong, the way you know your own name, and you cannot show your work. Claircognizants are the people who blurt out true things at dinner and then have to live with everyone staring at them.

Clairalience: clear smelling

Smelling what isn't there: pipe tobacco, a specific perfume, bread baking. This one shows up constantly in connection with departed loved ones, where a signature scent arrives as a kind of calling card. If that idea raises the hair on your arms in a good way, the signs a loved one is near is a whole article on it.

Clairgustance: clear tasting

The rarest of the set: a taste with no source. A medium friend of mine gets cherry cough syrup, of all things, whenever a message involves someone's childhood illness. Rare, oddly specific, and when it happens, unmistakable.

Which clair is your strongest?

You've had one running in the background your whole life. Here's how to spot it. Listen to your own default vocabulary: chronic "I see what you mean" people lean clairvoyant, "I hear you" people lean clairaudient, "that feels off" people clairsentient, "I just know" people claircognizant. It's not a party trick; your language reports which inner channel you trust.

Other tells, in the same spirit:

  • You think in pictures, remember faces over names, give directions by describing what things look like: clairvoyance.
  • Music sticks to you, you learn by listening, you catch tone of voice before content: clairaudience.
  • Crowds exhaust you, you absorb the mood of every room, other people's moods stick to you like smoke: clairsentience.
  • You make good decisions instantly and then spend a week finding reasons to justify them: claircognizance.

That third one deserves a caution flag. If crowds drain you and strangers' feelings soak in uninvited, you may be running clairsentience with no volume knob, and that's less a gift than a plumbing problem. Our guide to protection techniques for empaths is the fix, and I'd read it before doing any development work at all.

How a reader actually uses the clairs in a session

Nobody works one channel at a time. In a typical reading I'll get a picture, then a feeling that tells me what the picture is about, then sometimes a word that captions it. It comes through layered, like hearing a band rather than one instrument. My job is to report it plainly and let you tell me whether it lands. That last part matters: a good reader tells you what they're getting, not what you want, and doesn't get offended when a detail means nothing to you. Some details are for later. See the transcript story every working chat reader can tell.

If you've never sat for a session and want to know what that back-and-forth looks like in practice, here's what to expect from a first psychic reading. And the wider craft, tools, ethics, all of it, lives in the psychic readings hub.

Can you develop your clair senses?

Yes, the way you develop any perception: attention, repetition, and honest scorekeeping. No incense required.

  • Sit quietly for five minutes a day and notice what arrives before you judge it. Impressions come before opinions; you're learning to catch the earlier train.
  • Guess small things first. Who's texting, which elevator opens, what mood your friend is in before they speak. Low stakes, fast feedback.
  • Write down hits and misses both. The misses matter more. Anyone can remember their three lucky guesses; a notebook keeps you honest, and honesty is the whole instrument.
  • Name the channel. When something arrives, ask: did I see, hear, feel, or know that? Labeling builds the muscle faster than anything else I've found.
  • Rest the equipment. Perception sharpens on sleep and quiet. Nobody hears a note slid under the door during a house party.

One caution, given kindly: anxiety does an excellent impression of intuition. Dread that arrives loud, repetitive, and always catastrophic is usually your nervous system, not your clairs. Real impressions tend to be quiet, singular, and oddly neutral in tone. When in doubt, write it down, date it, and let reality grade it.

Quick answers on the clair senses

What are the six clair senses?

Clairvoyance (seeing), clairaudience (hearing), clairsentience (feeling), claircognizance (knowing), clairalience (smelling), and clairgustance (tasting). The first four carry most psychic work; the last two are rarer and usually tied to mediumship.

Is being an empath the same as clairsentience?

Close cousins. Empathy in the everyday sense is emotional attunement; clairsentience is when other people's states register in you as direct sensation, without cues to explain it. Many strong empaths are undeveloped clairsentients who never got the manual.

What's the most common clair sense?

In my years of doing this, clairsentience, and it isn't close. Most people feel first. The seeing and hearing tend to develop later, on top of that foundation.

If you want to hear what a developed set of clairs sounds like pointed at your own question, that's my whole working day, and I don't do vague. My chat is open, and your first question is free. Not sure I'm your style? Fair. Take the free reader-matching quiz and find whoever is. Then start the notebook tonight. Five minutes, one honest page. That's how every psychic I respect got started.
