The bell, on the record

The second Moon landing left behind a working seismometer as part of its surface science package. When the crew of that November 1969 mission finished their work and rejoined the command ship, mission control steered the discarded ascent stage of their lander back down for a deliberate crash, a free experiment giving the instrument a thump of known size at a known spot. The signal that came back did not behave like anything terrestrial. On Earth, the ringing from a quake fades in minutes, damped by water and soft rock. This signal built for several minutes and then took most of an hour to die away. The bell comparison came from the mission's own scientists, and they said it with delight rather than alarm, because a surprise in fresh data is the best day a scientist gets. The following spring, another mission, the one remembered for its emergency, still delivered its science on this point: its huge spent rocket stage was aimed at the surface, and that far heavier impact reverberated for hours. A resonant Moon invited a leap, and in 1970 two Soviet writers, Michael Vasin and Alexander Shcherbakov, took it with style. Writing in Sputnik, a popular digest magazine, they asked whether the Moon might be the creation of alien intelligence, a hollowed body steered into orbit long ago by someone with reasons of their own. Their piece was speculation and said so, but the image was unforgettable, and it landed in a decade primed to receive it. The shape of the thought was already lying around, fully formed, because fiction got there first: H. G. The measurements that settled it

The ringing has a plain cause, and the data behind it is public. The Moon is bone dry, cold and rigid, and its outer layers have been shattered by four billion years of impacts. Seismic energy in cracked, dry rock is not absorbed the way wet Earth absorbs it. It scatters, bounces and leaks away slowly. Dry rock rings. Beyond that:

  • The Moon's average density is about three fifths of Earth's, normal for rock with only a small core, wrong for any shell
  • The way it spins and swings through its orbit shows mass spread through the whole body, not gathered in a crust
  • Laser reflectors and orbiting probes have measured its shape and gravity to fine precision and found no cavity anywhere
  • In 2012 a pair of small spacecraft flying in formation mapped its gravity field and found the crust far more porous and battered than anyone had predicted

There is also a rule of scale with no known exception: above a certain size, gravity crushes voids shut. A hollow body the size of our Moon would collapse into a solid one, which is why the question was never really open.

The correction requires seismic damping, density figures and gravity mapping, and by its second sentence most of the audience has gone home. Yes, on the record and more than once. The phrase came from the seismic team describing the long reverberations after the deliberate impacts, and it was an analogy about how vibrations decayed, never a claim about structure. Could a natural object in space be hollow?

Small ones, partly, and this is the fun edge case. Some asteroids are loose rubble piles, boulders held together by gravity so weak that real voids survive inside them, and a few measured bodies are far less dense than their rock should allow. Hollowness at that scale is permitted because gravity there is feeble. Scale the body up past city sized and the voids start closing; at moon sized, physics forecloses the question entirely. The stranger true moon

My real complaint with the hollow story is that it trades away wonder and calls the trade a purchase. The documented Moon was born in a collision between worlds. It keeps one face turned toward us through the patient physics of tides. Its surface is a logbook four billion years long, every crater a recorded event, unhealed because no weather exists up there to heal it. Its cracked outer layers hum when struck, which is how this whole story started. A parked ship would be the lesser marvel. The real one is stranger, older and quieter, and it is up there tonight, ringing faintly whenever something falls on it.
