Ask a farmer in dry country how a well got sited and you may hear about an uncle who walked the field with a forked stick until it dipped. That is water witching, dowsing for groundwater. Dowsers swear by it; controlled studies and the U.S. Geological Survey find it no better than chance, because shallow water sits under almost everything.
Water witching, and why it is still living practice
Water witching is dowsing aimed at groundwater: a person paces a property holding a Y-shaped twig or two L-rods, and where the tool noses down or swings, they mark the spot to drill. You will hear it called divining, doodlebugging, or simply witching a well, and in farm country it is living practice, not history. Finding a well driller who quietly keeps a dowser's number is easier than you might think.
The practice is old and stubborn. Georgius Agricola's 1556 mining treatise De re metallica already includes woodcuts of prospectors working forked twigs over ore fields, and even Agricola, writing five centuries ago, advised miners to trust the visible signs of the land over the twig. The twig outlived his advice, crossed the Atlantic, and switched from ore to water somewhere along the way. My own road through the old arts runs straight through this one (I am Edmund); the man who taught me the grip had witched wells for two generations of neighbors and never once doubted it.

How do dowsers actually witch for water?
The classic tool is a fresh fork cut from willow, peach, or hazel, springy woods that load like a trigger. The dowser grips the two branches palms up, one in each fist, thumbs pointing outward, bending the fork slightly so tension sits in the wood, stem pointed a touch skyward. Then the slow walk, back and forth across the parcel in rough lanes. At the strike, the stem noses downward, sometimes hard enough to strip bark against the palms, and the spot gets a stake. Many practitioners then stand over the mark and count the tip's bobs to call depth, one bob per foot. The L-rod version works the same hunt with the crossing signal instead of the dip; if you want to try the tools yourself, making a pair of rods takes ten minutes and a coat hanger.
That loaded grip matters to the effect. A tensioned fork is a hair trigger, and the smallest roll of the wrists releases it. Where a dowser's attention goes, the wrists follow, which is why the dip feels utterly external and never is.
Does water witching actually work?
Two things are true at once, which is why the argument never ends. The dowser's side is lived experience: my grandfather witched every well in this county and every one of them hit, and some drillers still walk a dowser across the parcel before setting the rig. The trouble is what that experience cannot see. The U.S. Geological Survey's own explainer notes that across much of the country shallow groundwater is so widespread that it is hard to drill anywhere and miss, which keeps every dowser in those counties undefeated the way a man predicting sunrise is undefeated. The National Ground Water Association puts it flatly in a position paper: controlled evidence shows the technique has no scientific merit.
The Munich team itself believed a handful of stars had emerged from those barn trials. Enright's review showed the star turns were exactly what luck produces when hundreds of people each take many swings. No dowser has passed a well-controlled test since, and not for want of invitations.

Why it feels so real to the person holding the twig
Because the movement is real; only its cause is misassigned. The dowser's hands respond to expectation and to terrain reading that runs beneath awareness: greener grass in a swale, willows along an old fencerow, the low ground where fog settles on autumn mornings. Country people carry an unconscious education in hydrology, and the twig gives that education a voice. I find this genuinely beautiful, and it is why I never call honest dowsers frauds. The tool hides the authorship of the signal so completely that the person holding it is the most convinced one in the field. What should you do before drilling a well?
Start with data, not divination. Your state geological survey publishes well logs from neighboring parcels showing depth to water and yield, and many databases are searchable from your kitchen table. A licensed hydrogeologist reads your land's geology for a fraction of the cost of one dry hole. Local drillers know the aquifers better than anyone holding a stick, and your neighbors know what depth their pumps sit at. Gather all of that first, because a well is one of the largest single checks a rural household writes.
Then, if it pleases you, let your uncle walk the field with his peach fork and mark his X. If it lands where the hydrogeology already pointed, everyone gets to be right, which is, frankly, the outcome water witching has been delivering for five hundred years. What wood makes the best dowsing branch?
Tradition names willow, peach, and hazel, waterside and orchard trees whose forks cut green and stay flexible; a dry branch snaps instead of turning. The preference is folklore comfort rather than physics, since no controlled test has shown wood species mattering, and metal rods and plastic forks perform identically. Cut the fork fresh the morning you walk, about half an inch thick at the stem, and it will load properly in the grip.
How many water witches still work in the United States?
When anthropologist Evon Vogt and psychologist Ray Hyman researched their book Water Witching U.S.A. in the late 1950s, they estimated roughly 25,000 practicing dowsers in the country. Nobody has produced a firmer census since, but the American Society of Dowsers, founded in Danville, Vermont in 1961, still holds conventions, and every drought summer puts witching back in the farm press.
So: hydrogeologist first, well logs second, the neighbor's driller third, and then, by all means, uncle and his peach fork fourth, because a well christening deserves its ceremony and I have never met a drill crew that minded an audience.
